What Are Dental Crowns and Bridges?

Both dental crowns and bridges are prosthetic appliances used to replace damaged or missing teeth respectively. A dental crown fits over the tooth, either covering it completely or capping it partially, whereas a bridge replaces a missing tooth and is anchored in place by dental crowns on either side.

In other words, a bridge is used to span gaps left by missing teeth, whereas a dental crown is primarily used to protect teeth that have been weakened by decay or damage.

Are They Right for Me?

Both crowns and bridges are used to restore damaged teeth. However, they are used in different ways. A dental crown is used when a person has a single damaged tooth. The crown fits over the entire tooth and is used to restore the tooth’s shape, size, and appearance.

On the other hand, a dental bridge is used to replace one or more missing teeth. The bridge, which is referred to as a “fixed bridge” because the prosthetic teeth are not removable, is anchored to the teeth on either side of the gap.

Both these restorations are quite simple and long-lasting.

How Are They Made?

Crowns can be made from many different types of materials, including porcelain, gold, alloys, and composites. They are custom-made to fit your tooth perfectly. Some crowns are made in one piece, while other crowns are made in multiple pieces so that they can be attached to the tooth more easily.

Bridges are false teeth that take the place of missing teeth. They are sometimes used when a person is missing one or more teeth in a row. Bridges have crowns that are cemented onto teeth on each side of the space, and the artificial tooth attached to the crowns covers the gap. Both bridges and crowns are made of strong, durable ceramic material that will look and feel like your natural teeth. Since crowns and bridges are permanent restorations, they will last longer than dental fillings.

Crowns and bridges require two dental visits. During the first visit, we will prepare the tooth or teeth receiving treatment. In some cases, we will need to remove a small amount of the enamel to allow room for the crown or bridge.

Then, we will take an impression of your teeth. This impression will be sent to our dental lab where your custom crown or bridge will be fabricated. During your second visit, we will place the crown or bridge over your teeth and make any adjustments as needed. Both bridges and crowns will last for many years with proper care.

I am currently unemployed and temporarily on Medicaid. I am a periodontal patient and also in Clear Correct treatment. The care plan and financing are pretty reasonable. I tried a cheaper route elsewhere, but I regretted it and returned to North End Dental. I love the staff and the office. I wouldn’t trust my oral health care to anyone else!

I am a fearful dentist patient. This place has made my experience much less fearful. The kindness & thorough attention is amazing from this dentist. He helped me feel so comfortable and unashamed about my missing teeth and gum disease. They are willing to work with me and are very patient with me as it seems to take me a few months to return. I have much anxiety about the dentist office, especially with no dental insurance. The ladies at the front desk are so friendly & courteous. The office has a very relaxed feel and no condemnation about the poor condition of my mouth. Instead, nothing but assurance that they can help me and we can take it as slowly or as fast as I want or can afford. The dentist really took his time with me and it allowed me to feel not rushed. I would highly recommend this dentist whether you just need routine care or higher level of care as my teeth & gums require. This place has felt like a 2nd home to me and I have nothing but anxiety over the dentist office. This place has acknowledged my anxiety and they don’t try to push it aside but instead work with it and with me. I greatly appreciate that.

I broke a crown off in the front of my mouth. Went to North End Dental to see about getting it fixed. I also had other teeth missing making it hard to eat. It also made me uncomfortable meeting people. They got me in same day I walked in and did the exam. They recommended a treatment plan and in a week I had my first appointment to fix my upper teeth. Everyone was very pleasant and helpful. Really pleased with outcome of the temporary crowns. Can’t wait to see the permanent crowns in 2 weeks. Would absolutely recommend anyone at North End Dental!!!

Went in after I had a really bad trip and fall, so I was not doing so great. They were extremely kind and professional with me. I felt calm throughout the whole visit, and they were very accommodating to my needs. Kjersti was absolutely lovely and so caring. Highly recommend!

I have been going to North End Dental for about three years now, and my experience with them has exceeded all expectations. Professional and friendly are words to describe everyone from the front office, to the dental personnel, to the dentists. A shout out to Abby who is so skilled, thorough, and caring in her work as a hygentist, and also to Dr. Moore whose expertise, experience, and precision in his work are so much appreciated! North End Dental is top notch!

This is the first time ever that i am excited for the future of my smile. To not live in pain everyday. It wouldnt have been able to happen if it was for North End Dental. I say that with experience as i have tried 75+ other dentists to have my teeth fixed and came up with the same answer, dental implants are for the rich. That was until i came here and they said let us work with you, let us help you. So glad i found this dentist.

After moving here from out of state, my husband and I were very nervous to start with a new dentist. We were/are so very impressed with the entire experience we’ve had since we’ve started coming here. I saw Dr. Umphlett whom was gentle, kind and extremely thorough. My husband saw Dr. Moore whom was equally gentle, kind, and thorough. We both see Abby as our hygienist, she is awesome! Not only is North End Dental absolutely beautiful on the inside, the people who work here are so kind and make sure that you are taken care of. We will not be seeing another dentist as long as North End Dental is in business. Thank you North End for changing our perspective on dentistry and for taking such good care of us!

I was greeted with a brand new hygienist after check in. She had just been at North End Dental a week. It would have been nice if someone had called to let me know that my regular hygienist was no longer with the practice. She was amazing. Allison was our new hygienist and she too was amazing. This is why I have given a 5 star. I have always had wonderful service at North End Dental. Allison listened to some things that the former Hygienist had done and was very acceptable to those as well as her own touch. She did a wonderful job cleaning my teeth. She is a wonderful addition to North End Dental. WELCOME!!!!! Please don’t loose that customer service. I owned my own business for 15 years. I sold it in 2018. Customer service is so very important. It is lacking in todays businesses.
