Aftercare Tips For Root Canal

0ad6e4defa33572dcc10092014e99bca

Root Canal in Colorado Springs CO is a dental procedure used to treat infection or inflammation of the pulp of the tooth. The pulp is a soft substance inside the tooth that contains blood vessels and nerves. If the pulp becomes infected, it can cause pain and lead to an abscess. Keeping teeth clean is the best way to prevent infection and ensure they stay healthy for years to come. Here are some tips for taking care of teeth and following aftercare instructions after a Root Canal in Colorado Springs CO.

  • Avoid chewing on the side of the mouth where the tooth was removed for several days following the procedure.
  • Brush and floss teeth every day, but avoid brushing the treated tooth for a few days. Most patients will feel back to normal within a few days, so it’s okay to gently brush the tooth or rinse with salt water.
  • Keep the area around the treatment site clean and dry. This means no sticky eating foods that can get stuck in the gums, smoking, or other tobacco products that can cause irritation. It also means avoiding drinking out of a straw. Straws can cause water to get stuck around the tooth and cause bacteria to grow.
  • Use high-quality toothpaste and rinse twice a day with warm water to keep teeth and gums healthy and clean. Use a soft-bristled brush to clean around and under the gum line. Gently brush the tongue to remove bacteria and freshen your breath.
  • Limit sticky or crunchy foods. Since the tooth is numb, patients may not feel food stuck between their teeth. Try to avoid these tough foods until your anesthesia wears off.
  • Rinse the mouth a few times a week with an antimicrobial mouthwash to reduce harmful bacteria in the mouth.
  • Visit the dentist every six months for a checkup and cleaning. The dentist can evaluate the health of the tooth and surrounding tissues and provide tips for proper at-home care.
  • Don’t use your teeth as tools to open packages or bottles. This puts extra pressure on the tooth and increases the risk of damage in the future when the tooth is weakened by decay or injury.

If you experience any unusual symptoms following a root canal, contact a dentist as soon as possible. Some symptoms of serious complications include increased pain, discoloration of the affected tissue, swelling in the face near the infected tooth, fever, chills, and more. It’s also important to see your dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings to keep your teeth and smile healthy and clean!
