What Causes Gum Disease?
Gum disease is caused by plaque buildup along the gum line. Plaque buildup occurs from food or beverages that get caught between the teeth. The foods or beverages that get stuck between the teeth feed plaque bacteria, and the plaque makes the gums inflamed. This inflammation is the start of gum disease.
How Is Gum Disease Treated?
There are five stages of gum disease; and with each stage, the severity increases. Stage 1 is quite mild, and stage 5 is severe. At stage 1, you may be experiencing bleeding gums when you brush or floss. Your gums may also look red or swollen.
In order to treat these symptoms, we could prescribe brushing and flossing more frequently and a medicated rinse to help kill the bacteria causing the infection. We will also carry out oral cleaning and root planing if required.

Gum disease occurs when the gums become inflamed and infected. Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is caused by bacteria and plaque buildup. The best way to prevent gum disease is to practice good oral hygiene habits. Who Is at Risk for Gum Disease?
The short answer is everyone. But, there are certain factors that put some people at higher risk for gum disease.
- Age: Gum disease is most common in adults over the age of 35. As you get older, your gums simply start to recede. This makes them more susceptible to gum disease.
