What is a Bone Graft?

A bone graft is a procedure that replaces missing or damaged bone tissue with healthy, new tissue. The graft makes it possible for the body to regenerate bone and restore the natural structure of the jaw.

A bone graft is often performed after a tooth is lost or extracted. If a tooth is lost, the jaw may shrink and change shape, affecting your ability to receive dental implants. A bone graft can build up the bone where the tooth used to be, ensuring there is enough bone in the jaw to support the implant.

Procedure For a Bone Graft

While preparing for bone grafting surgery, your dentist will first take 3D images of your mouth, allowing them to plan for your procedure. Then, your dentist will give you a local anesthetic to numb your mouth, so you won’t feel pain during the surgery.

A bone graft is a minor procedure, and it usually does not require an overnight stay. The affected area will be numbed prior to your dental procedure. Then, the graft will be inserted into the space. You may receive a graft that is made from synthetic material or from your own bone.

The bone provides structural support for your jaw. When the bone is weakened, it can lead to changes in your bite, including misalignment. A bone graft can restore strength and function to your weakened bone structure.

What Happens After a Bone Graft?

After a bone graft procedure, you might feel some pain. Your dentist can prescribe pain relievers to help you manage any discomfort. Thus, it’s important that you follow the instructions of your dentist and take any medications as directed.

To protect the bone graft, our Dentist Colorado Springs CO might recommend that you avoid specific activities, such as biting down on hard foods. We would also recommend a soft food diet for a few weeks.

How Long Does a Bone Graft Last?

The length of time a bone graft lasts depends largely on the type of graft used. A bone graft that is placed and has healed properly can last for a lifetime.

However, it’s important to remember that once a tooth is gone, the bone that once supported that tooth is no longer fully there. Therefore, the bone will resorb and not grow back.

Bone Graft FAQ

A dental bone graft is a surgical procedure in which bone tissue is transplanted to repair or regenerate bone in the jaw that has been lost due to injury, gum disease or tooth extraction.

Most people experience very little pain during the procedure due to the use of local anesthesia. However, there may be some soreness and swelling after the surgery.

Healing time varies depending on several factors such as the size of the implant, your overall health, and how well you follow post-operative instructions from your dentist. Generally, it takes anywhere from three to six months for a dental bone graft to fully heal.

As with any surgical procedure, there are some risks involved such as infection or rejection of the implanted material by your body’s immune system.

Not everyone is an ideal candidate for dental implants, especially if they have uncontrolled health problems like diabetes or heart disease. Your oral surgeon will evaluate your individual condition to determine whether or not you’re a suitable candidate for an implant.

There are several types of materials used in a dental bone graft such as autografts (from patient’s own body), allografts (from human donors) and synthetic materials made from calcium-based compounds.

The cost of a dental bone graft depends on various factors such as the type of material used and size of the implant needed among others factors which mean the price vary significantly among patients.

Most dental insurance policies do not cover the cost of bone grafting procedures, but some health insurance plans may cover a portion of the procedure cost. Contact your provider for more information.

Your dentist will provide you with instructions on what to eat and avoid after surgery. Generally, you should avoid hard, crunchy foods and stick to soft foods like soups and smoothies during the healing period.

With proper care, a dental bone graft can last a lifetime since it becomes part of your natural bone structure over time. However, poor oral hygiene or certain diseases may increase the risk of implant failure.

Great service, wonderful people…really do feel taken care of here. Dr Hill is a good guy, seems to take a real interest in getting things right and Sofia is great, too…real clear about what it is she’s doing and why she’s doing it….cant say enough good things about them. Worked with my particular set of needs and sent me away happier than when I showed up…rare for a dentist in my opinion.

Katie Bugge
I was greeted with a brand new hygienist after check in. She had just been at North End Dental a week. It would have been nice if someone had called to let me know that my regular hygienist was no longer with the practice. She was amazing. Allison was our new hygienist and she too was amazing. This is why I have given a 5 star. I have always had wonderful service at North End Dental. Allison listened to some things that the former Hygienist had done and was very acceptable to those as well as her own touch. She did a wonderful job cleaning my teeth. She is a wonderful addition to North End Dental. WELCOME!!!!! Please don’t loose that customer service. I owned my own business for 15 years. I sold it in 2018. Customer service is so very important. It is lacking in todays businesses.
